  1. Let the bird of loudest lay
  2.     On the sole Arabian tree
  3.     Herald sad and trumpet be,
  4.     To whose sound chaste wings obey.    4

  6. But thou shrieking harbinger,
  7.     Foul precurrer of the fiend,
  8.     Augur of the fever's end,
  9.     To this troop come thou not near.    8

  11. From this session interdict
  12.     Every fowl of tyrant wing,
  13.     Save the eagle, feathered king:
  14.     Keep the obsequy so strict.    12

  16. Let the priest in surplice white,
  17.     That defunctive music can,
  18.     Be the death-divining swan,
  19.     Lest the requiem lack his right.    16

  21. And thou treble-dated crow,
  22.     That thy sable gender mak'st
  23.     With the breath thou giv'st and tak'st,
  24.     'Mongst our mourners shalt thou go.    20

  26. Here the anthem doth commence:

  28.     Phoenix and the turtle fled
  29.     In a mutual flame from hence.    24
